Communication

“Effective communication – speaking, writing, and listening – is the glue of successful team functionality” (Evans & Alire, 2013, p. 356).

School librarians need to be able to effectively communicate organizational and personal goals with library staff and administrators. According to Blanche Woolls and David V. Loertscher (2013), school librarians must be able to communicate with “School administrators about school library programs on a daily basis” (p. 132).  School libraries have a higher chance of succeeding with organizational goals and personal goals if they can effectively communicate as a team. According to Evans and Alire (2013) effective communication includes the following four rules below (p. 356-357).

  1. Open and Honest

  2. Clear and Concise

  3. Consistency

  4. Civil and Courteous

MindTools is a site that offers individuals information on how to lead, manage, and communicate with others. The site expands on the concepts from Evans and Alire (2013) about effective communication. According to MindTools there are “7 Cs of Communication” that we should keep in mind when working with others. The “7 Cs of Communication” according to MindTools are:

  1. Clear

  2. Concise

  3. Concrete

  4. Correct

  5. Coherent

  6. Complete

  7. Courteous

The “7 Cs of Communication” are also beneficial to school librarians who work with numerous different individuals and age groups all day long. Here is a short video from MindTools explaining the “7 Cs of Communication.”
